Our Thoughts on the 30A.com Trademark Situation

Many of you may have noticed that there is a little trademark dispute happening right here in our little slice of paradise. (if not, you can brush up by following this link.) While we don’t have a horse in the race, we thought we’d write a few words expressing our thoughts on the matter. We have also created a way for you to express your own opinion in a unique way (see below).

Of the two “biggie” websites in the area, one of them is a merchandising powerhouse. A powerhouse that has taken a page out of George Lucas’ play book and placed their name on everything from i-phone covers to beer. The only places we haven’t seen the 30a.com brand is on condoms and happy meals. Which may be announced soon at the rate things are being added to the product offerings, but we digress.

Regardless of what you may think of the brand and/or the powers behind it, 30a.com’s efforts should actually be admired. Profit, when earned ethically, is not a dirty word, and selling a crap load of merchandise isn’t their only contribution to South Walton County. If not for their efforts, many local businesses and charities would lose a promotional outlet, YOU wouldn’t know where Forrest Williams is playing every night, and Bryan Kennedy wouldn’t be a household name (which for some, would be a blessing).

Because we’re not legal experts, we really cannot speculate as to how the court battle will play out, but we must admit that there really are some similarities between the two logos. There also seems to be a conscious attempt to capitalize on the 30a.com brand. On the other hand, the logos are different enough for the defendants to stage a fight.

Many of you support 30a.com’s efforts to protect their brand; many of you take great pleasure in the controversy and actually despise 30a.com; and then there are those of you who really don’t care.  Regardless of how you feel about it, we have devised a way for you to proudly display your stance on the matter via the 30ascene.com take a stance apparel line.
